| What is Salsa? ‘Salsa’ literally means a hot and spicy concoction or sauce Today the word has come to represent a genre of exciting music and dance emanating from the Spanish speaking Caribbean. Salsa the music and dance, is hot and spicy like the sauce, and is the most popular form of Latin dance at the moment Origins and Development of Salsa Essentially Cuban in origin, it was here where Contra-Danze (Country Dance) of England/France/Spain, (later called Danzón) was mixed with the Rhumbas of the African slaves (Guaguanco, Colombia, Yambú) with the addition of the Són of the Cuban people (a mixture of the Spanish troubadour (sonero) and the African drumbeats) A similar mixture also occurred in smaller degrees and with variations, in other Latin American countries (the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Puerto Rico etc). Many Cuban musicians went to New York, where they met up with other artists from Puerto Rico, Dominica, Venezuela, Colombia and Panama. New groups and bands were formed which played a new type of music brought about by the mix of cultures. The incorporation of other Latin rhythms into the musical structure was reflected in the dance, giving birth to the hot and exciting dance we know as ‘Salsa’ today.
